Soccer Stats: MLS & Premier League

An analysis of payroll efficiency in MLS and the 2025–26 Premier League title race.

This site explores two datasets in professional soccer: MLS team payroll vs. performance, and the 2025–26 English Premier League standings. The goal is to understand what the numbers tell us about efficiency, competition, and value in professional soccer.

Core Findings

  1. Spending more doesn't guarantee more points. In MLS, the Philadelphia Union earned the most points per million dollars spent, despite not having the highest payroll. San Diego FC spent the most but ranked 8th in efficiency.
  2. The Premier League title race is genuinely close. Through 24 games of the 2025–26 season, only 7 points separate first-place Arsenal (53 pts) from third-place Aston Villa (46 pts).
